On Earth Day, a lesson from the planet

It is often said that nothing — or nobody — can ever be perfect.

That is one of humankind’s greatest lies.

Everything on this planet, and everything in the universe as we know it, is perfect.

It is perfect because it is.

Simply.

And beautifully.

From the tiniest zooplankton to the mighty blue whale; from wildflowers to redwoods; from grains of sand to the Grand Canyon; the Earth is teeming with perfection.

Even what we perceive as imperfections are only so in our minds. Hurricanes, wildfires, volcanic eruptions, floods… each is a part of the planet’s self-maintaining system of life and death.

Each is neither good nor bad.

Each just is.

The Earth’s perfection is not stagnant; its incessant evolution is a part of it.

And, as far as we can tell, nothing else on this planet questions this perfection.

No other creature asks itself whether it can stand up against a fabricated standard.

It simply exists.

It perfectly exists.

So the next time you find yourself trying to make yourself or another feel better because “nobody is perfect”, remember this:

The Earth is perfect. And you are a part of it.

Like the shimmer of a star, the coat of a lion, the bark of a tree, and the howl of the wind, you are the embodiment of perfection.

The planet you live on also lives in you.
