Green girl power: celebrating women in environment
On International Women’s Day, a celebration of a few women who have fought to preserve our natural environment and all who depend on it.
Winona LaDuke
Winona LaDuke is the founder of the White Earth Land Recovery Project, a mission to retrieve 837,000 acres of land for its native owners. She also leads Honor the Earth, a nonprofit organization working on creating awareness and support for Native environmental issues. She continues to advocate for renewable energy and sustainable development.
Tanya Fields
Tanya Fields is an environmental and social justice activist from The Bronx, New York. Her growing roles include member of Mothers on the Move’s Environmental Justice Committee and Outreach Coordinator at Sustainable South Bronx. She works to bring sustainability and environmental justice to her community through her brain child, The BLK ProjeK, which hosts yoga classes for Bronx moms, creates urban farms, and operates a local farm share.
Sangdeaun Chailert
Sangdeaun Chailert is a Thai conservationist and founder of Save Elephant Foundation, a sanctuary dedicated to caring for Thailand’s rescued captive elephants. Called the “Elephant Whisperer”, Chailert rescues elephants who have been captured and forced into labor, nursing them back to health and nurturing their eroded trust of humans. In addition to looking after the elephants, she advocates for Thailand and other governments to take measures to protect elephants and other endangered species.
